The History of FCR
Feline Cat Rescue (FCR) was founded in 1981. It grew from a Lost and Found register that had been operating for many years. It was realised that there was a need to provide temporary accommodation for stray cats and soon afterwards also for cats and kittens that were unwanted or whose owners could no longer keep them.
We operate via a network of foster homes, from our Headquarters in Luton and throughout Beds, Herts and Bucks. Some of our fosterers have the facilities to take a greater number of cats whilst others take just one or two, but all make a valuable contribution. FCR provide the food, litter and veterinary care. Our fosterers are all volunteers, so all money we receive goes directly to the cats.
We use a number of vets in the area, to all of whom we are greatly indebted.
We also take in feral cats and kittens. Some of these do become friendly and can be homed normally, while others go to stables, farms or small holdings where they are fed daily and can enjoy the freedom they crave.
All cats over six months of age are spayed or castrated before homing and new owners are encouraged to have them micro-chipped on adoption. We feel that the small extra cost to the new owner is money well spent as it can facilitate the quick tracing of a lost or injured cat.
While we aim to re-home as many animals as possible, there are always some who are unsuitable, either through health or temperament. These stay with us. NO animal is ever put to sleep except on a vet’s recommendation.
Pregnant cats, whether domestic or feral, are allowed to have and rear their kittens. At 10 weeks old the kittens are ready for homing and Mum is neutered and also homed.
Over the years we have built up a wealth of experience and we are always willing to share this with anyone who wants advice.
